Announcements / 2025 RASC Calendar - Submisssions!
« Last post by Victor.Abraham on March 19, 2024, 11:05:25 AM »
Hello NC Reps,

I'm sending this along on behalf of Ryan Génier, one of the volunteers working on the 2025 Observer's Calendar. Please share this message with your Centres to encourage submissions!

My name is Ryan Génier, I'm a member of the KW RASC and am helping out with the Observer's Calendar this year. Hopefully you would have seen the communications about the calendar that the image submissions are currently open. The deadline for submission is Mar 31st, with an extended deadline of April 30th for any eclipse photos.

The goal of the calendar (with regards to images) is to be a showcase for all of the talented astrophotographers (and sketchers!) across the country. We are trying hard this year to extend our reach as far as possible, to involve and to give exposure to as many talents as possible.

With that said, we need your help to share this message with your Centre's membership. This could be a direct email blast from yourselves, a note at a monthly meeting, or even directly encouraging people that you know to submit. The link for the image submissions, including the technical details, can be found at the below:

https://www.rasc.ca/calendarsubmissions

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact us at calendareditor@rasc.ca. Appreciate everyone's help with this.

An urgent message from the Club President:

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring to your attention to an insightful article recently featured in the Hamilton Spectator that aligns with our shared interests and values. The piece highlights the less than successful attempts we have had with the City of Hamilton to offer a path towards restoring the utility and usability of our Observatory. There is a link to the article below.

As members of our community, our collective voice holds tremendous power. I encourage you to respectfully share your thoughts and positive perspectives on this article now,  through letters to the editor, online comments, or social media. Comment directly to the article by clicking on the link below and select 'Join the conversation', sign up, and comment. Or you can use one of the other 3 links below. By doing so, we can contribute to a constructive conversation and help amplify the impact of the article. Let’s join forces to spread optimism, knowledge, and awareness. Together, we can make a difference in shaping public discourse and promoting the ideas that matter to us.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our shared mission.

Best regards,
Andy Blanchard

President, Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Hamilton Centre

Great work Victor. You're soon going to have a world class astro library.

25 new items added to the library.

Including some really neat additions, like:

  • a Tasco 15TE-5 76mm refractor, generously donated by Bob Prociuk. Sadly this scope has been hiding in a box in virtually brand new condition. It's a very capable scope from an era when quality was still a top concern for manufacturers
  • a vintage Bausch & Lomb Criterion 8" SCT
  • a variety of guides from the McLaughlin Planetarium
  • a second copy of Neil deGrasse Tyson's book on Astrophysics for People in a Hurry
  • a book on the 2024 Solar Eclipse
  • and a book by our latest monthly meeting speaker, Dr. Mark Tovey, featuring a collection of astronomically related poetry

New items being added weekly so go check it out: https://www.librarycat.org/lib/HamiltonRASCAdmin

Here is a link to RASC's response from the Ministry of Transport dated November 16, 2022: https://www.rasc.ca/authorisation

It's a blanket letter granting us the use of GLP's within certain guidelines. It's highly recommended to keep a copy with you if you do any outreach and have a GLP.

RASC also has a number of resources on their site: https://www.rasc.ca/laser-pointer-usage
