Announcements / Re: RASC Anti-Harassment Polic...
Last post by Victor.Abraham - April 22, 2024, 08:59:23 PM
Slight revision to the policy undertaken by myself to section E iv. a.

The existing section reads:

a. The Complaint will be provided, by a Committee member, as agreed upon, to the Alleged Offender, along with a copy of this Policy.

The revised version will read:

a. A summary of the Complaint will be provided, by a Committee member, as agreed upon, to the Alleged Offender, along with a copy of this Policy.

This change is being made to maintain the confidentiality, as is best possible, of the Complainant and those involved in the Complaint.

As a result of this change the document version has been updated from 1.0 to 1.1 (as this is non-material representing a minor change). To track these and any future changes, a new section has been added to the end of the document. This new version of the policy will be uploaded to our website and can be found attached.

Announcements / Eclipse Glasses Collection (fo...
Last post by Victor.Abraham - April 10, 2024, 11:21:12 AM
Some of you may have seen that we've posted (through social media) a plan to collect gently used solar glasses. This wasn't part of an plan in place prior to the eclipse, but a link to the Astronomers Without Borders site came across my desk and I think it's a wonderful idea. Astronomers without Borders have been collecting and redistributing glasses since 2008. They distribute them to people that otherwise wouldn't have access to safe solar viewing options.

This initiative all started yesterday when I posted the thought to social media. https://www.reddit.com/r/BurlingtonON/comments/1c0k6yg/collecting_eclipse_glasses/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

It's posted to the Hamilton, Burlington, and Oakville subreddits. I've also posted a Facebook Marketplace ad across several groups. I've also reached out to any ads within a reasonable distance to see if they'd be willing to donate their remaining supply. We've already had 50 glasses donated and more promised.

This is evolving quickly with both McMaster Department of Astronomy and Physics being onboard as well as the Hamilton Public Library as collection partners. In speaking to the HPL I've also found out they have a number of pictures in their archive of the DB Marsh Observatory and Nefoudland eclipse expedition (which they are sending me).

More to come...

Announcements / 2025 RASC Calendar - Submisssi...
Last post by Victor.Abraham - March 19, 2024, 11:05:25 AM
Hello NC Reps,

I'm sending this along on behalf of Ryan Génier, one of the volunteers working on the 2025 Observer's Calendar. Please share this message with your Centres to encourage submissions!

My name is Ryan Génier, I'm a member of the KW RASC and am helping out with the Observer's Calendar this year. Hopefully you would have seen the communications about the calendar that the image submissions are currently open. The deadline for submission is Mar 31st, with an extended deadline of April 30th for any eclipse photos.

The goal of the calendar (with regards to images) is to be a showcase for all of the talented astrophotographers (and sketchers!) across the country. We are trying hard this year to extend our reach as far as possible, to involve and to give exposure to as many talents as possible.

With that said, we need your help to share this message with your Centre's membership. This could be a direct email blast from yourselves, a note at a monthly meeting, or even directly encouraging people that you know to submit. The link for the image submissions, including the technical details, can be found at the below:

https://www.rasc.ca/calendarsubmissions

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact us at calendareditor@rasc.ca. Appreciate everyone's help with this.

An urgent message from the Club President:

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring to your attention to an insightful article recently featured in the Hamilton Spectator that aligns with our shared interests and values. The piece highlights the less than successful attempts we have had with the City of Hamilton to offer a path towards restoring the utility and usability of our Observatory. There is a link to the article below.

As members of our community, our collective voice holds tremendous power. I encourage you to respectfully share your thoughts and positive perspectives on this article now,  through letters to the editor, online comments, or social media. Comment directly to the article by clicking on the link below and select 'Join the conversation', sign up, and comment. Or you can use one of the other 3 links below. By doing so, we can contribute to a constructive conversation and help amplify the impact of the article. Let's join forces to spread optimism, knowledge, and awareness. Together, we can make a difference in shaping public discourse and promoting the ideas that matter to us.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our shared mission.

Best regards,
Andy Blanchard
