The Field of View feature is indispensible for selecting imaging targets.

Suggestion...to help you choose which refractor to buy, "invent" a telescope
that gives you 500mm and 600mm focal length (aperature X's focal ratio. Ie:
80mm*f8 = 480mm). Plug those focal lengths into TheSky and then pick those
objects that are on your imaging "wish list". It will help you decide what
focal length scope you should buy.

On Saturday I purchased the TheSkyX Serious Astronomer version and therefore
the wet Sunday we had today. The wet weather gave me the chance to explore
the software and see what it can do. I enjoyed using the field of view
calculator which can be placed on objects to determine if my scope/camera
combination will allow my set up to take pictures of the entire object.  I
can see my next purchase down the road will be a refractor, perhaps either
80 or 102 mm. Next task is to go out to the observatory and connect my mount
and confirm the telescope control.

I read the article about planetary imaging by Jerry Lodriguss in the May
issue of Sky & Telescope and it peaked my interest. Has anyone tried this
using his method? What about those who have the Canon XSi (450D), have you
tried taking pictures when the camera doesn't shoot video and use software
such as Registax?

I made the same purchase about a month ago to use with my scopes and mount, but quickly discovered that the SA version doesn't support ASCOM mount control. The software natively supports a pile of mounts, but I wanted to use the ASCOM drivers for my AP mount, so had to upgrade to TheSkyX Professional.

Subject: RASC Hamilton 16" Scope Diagnosis - Mystery Solved

Some of you heard the news that our 16" scope had fallen ill last week.
Actually, the scope is fine. It's the mount that is ill.

 

Our first suspicion was the one of the circuit boards had bitten the dust as
it did a few years ago. Tonight Andy and I did some more digging and voltage
tests revealed that the circuit board seems fine. So we did some exploratory
surgery and have a firm diagnosis. Are you ready for it?........ Mice! 

 

Somehow the little buggers squeezed through the grill work and made
themselves at home inside the mount. The bits of nut shells we found inside
obviously did not satisfy their hunger so they chose to find nourishment
from the cables that power the motors and encoders. It's similar to the
"ribbon" cables you find inside a computer. 

 

A new cable should fix the problem but we still have the issue of bits of
nut shells that found their way into the RA shaft bearings. Andy and I will
be dismantling the mount over the long weekend to rectify the bearing
situation. 

 

WARNING: The observatory has tons of stuff laying about so please steer
clear of the NE corner of the building.

 

We will also take this opportunity to tidy up the wiring.

 

Hope to have it up and running again soon. We'll keep you posted.

Truth be told, I know almost nothing about electronics. But I do know about

I would have loved to come out and help you and Andy tonight. But, I have been battling a severe (Klingon?) head cold for the last week that has also affected everyone at work. So, I will keep it at home and wish you both good luck with the repair job ahead. I will take a rain check on the Hydrogen Alpha visual of the Moon as I would really like to see the Moon too through “rose-coloured glasses”. Would suggest putting a hinged cage of fine steel mesh screen on a shaped chicken-wire shell around the mount to prevent further rodent intrusions when the ‘scope is not in use. Once they find a warm home, it is difficult to keep them out. Good luck.

Good News!

 

Andy and I were successful in repairing the damage done by the inconsiderate mice. We took the mount to Andy’s workshop to carry out surgery.

 

In all, there were 6 wires that had been chewed through. The mice obviously preferred the taste of DEC wires because RA wires were untouched. We also were able to remove the bit of nut shells that made their way into the DEC shaft bearings.

 

Tonight we will be heading to the observatory to reinstall the mount and scope. After that we will adjust Polar alignment and do a short run to tune pointing accuracy. 

 

We would welcome your company if you feel like lending a helping hand. If you can stay out late enough we should have everything finished in time to have some fun with the refurbished mount. Andy discovered the best view of a full moon you will ever see. A imaging Hydrogen Alpha filter does a fabulous job and dimming down the bright moon and reveals amazing details that you can only see with the Ha Filter.

 

It will be crystal clear tonight but it will get chilly so dress warm.

 

Oh, and we are going to be reducing the clutter of wires on the back of the scope. I have made a power console that sit atop of the scope and provides different voltages:

-          2V for the illuminated reticle on the finder scope

-          5V for the USB hub

-          8V to power a Canon DSLR camera

-          12V for cooling fans (we will reconnect them at some point), dew heater controller (coming soon).

This will eliminate several cables running through the mount and it will also eliminate the need for a bunch of AC adapters. 

 

I will be posting pictures of the operation in a few days.

Good news! The 16" scope is back in action.

 

After repairing the damaged cables, Andy, Jason, Colin and myself remounted
the scope and had some time left over to get a good look at the moon with
the aid of a hydrogen alpha filter.

 

We still have some tidy-up work to do on the wiring but the scope is ready
for action.

 

I posted some photos on the Forum website (http:\\forum.hamiltonrasc.ca).
Look in the Observatories section and you will see a new topic "Paramount ME
Mount Repair".

You are most welcome Joe. The scope works well thanks to Colin Haig our National 2nd, who brought it back to life last month. If it gives you any trouble just shout out, and a I assure you will get lots of help. Just a note to everyone lurking out there, we have a lending program for members to sign out a club scope for 30 days. We have lots of scopes so don't be shy.

I may be there, however I need to clarify the date. It says Thursday, 
April 27th, however Thursday is the 26th. If it Friday, April 27th I

For those of us who attended Gary Colwell's Astroimaging session, we were
not disappointed. It was another great example of how one can venture into
the dark side of astronomy without it being to complicated.

Gary discussed the various planetarium and astronomy software available and
for those interested, the Hamilton site lists most of the products
discussed. Once the site is open on your browser, click the resource link on
the top and scroll down and click on software tools.  This opens another
page with planetarium software and astrophotography software on the left.
>From there you can select either one and see the list of products. I have
gone through the list and have provided some additional information.

The planetarium software link has TheSkyX, Starrynight, Stellarium, and
Carte du Ciel all can be run with Windows or Mac. Stellarium and Carte du
Ciel are free. Earth Centered Universe (ECU) is missing from the list and is
run on Windows only from what I found on the website. It is $80. This
product was developed by Dave Lane of the Halifax centre and past RASC
president. He is quick to respond to questions. If you click on TheSkyX link
it will state post not found but the links on the top work fine.  I use ECU
and just recently obtained TheSkyX.

The astrophotography software link has BackyardEOS which runs on Windows
from what I could find on the website and is a great program for those who
use a Canon camera. The creator lives in Ottawa and is quick to answer
questions on the forum in the Yahoo groups. Images Plus (link on our website
not working) which Gary talked about runs on Windows. This is a popular
program used by many astronomers and will most likely be my next full
purchase. Nebulosity can be run with Windows and Mac and is a good starter
program for the price with a great forum on Yahoo groups. Maxim DL can be
run on Windows and is the granddaddy of programs. Deep Sky Stacker uses
Windows and is free. PHD autoguiding is run with Windows or Mac and is free
and is distributed from the same site as Nebulosity. Astro Photography Tool
(APT) is not listed but used by Gary and looks similar to BackyardEOS. I use
BackyardEOS, Nebulosity and PHD. 

I found this link http://astronomy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ which
gives a comparison of various programs. Hopefully it won't confuse the
issue.

Many of the programs can be found on the Yahoo group forums. To get a better
idea if a product is suitable for your needs, check out the website and ask
fellow astronomers what they use.  Hope this is helpful and I am looking
forward to Gary's next session.

Hi folks,

First posting... but wondering if there might be a few folks who would
be willing to help with some astronomy, on the last weekend of May, at
the Binbrook Conservation Area?

 

We're out there for a camp, Friday and Saturday night. We have a list of
possible topics (badge bits), and could do some in daylight, but also
after dark. (Friday likely easier for this, they tend to stay up later
Fridays)

 

Hoping for help, that might understand 8-12 year olds. ;-)

The Field of View feature is indispensible for selecting imaging targets.

Suggestion...to help you choose which refractor to buy, "invent" a telescope
that gives you 500mm and 600mm focal length (aperature X's focal ratio. Ie:
80mm*f8 = 480mm). Plug those focal lengths into TheSky and then pick those
objects that are on your imaging "wish list". It will help you decide what
focal length scope you should buy.

the wet Sunday we had today. The wet weather gave me the chance to explore
the software and see what it can do. I enjoyed using the field of view
calculator which can be placed on objects to determine if my scope/camera
combination will allow my set up to take pictures of the entire object.  I
can see my next purchase down the road will be a refractor, perhaps either
80 or 102 mm. Next task is to go out to the observatory and connect my mount
and confirm the telescope control.

I read the article about planetary imaging by Jerry Lodriguss in the May
issue of Sky & Telescope and it peaked my interest. Has anyone tried this
using his method? What about those who have the Canon XSi (450D), have you
tried taking pictures when the camera doesn't shoot video and use software
such as Registax?

I made the same purchase about a month ago to use with my scopes and mount, but quickly discovered that the SA version doesn't support ASCOM mount control. The software natively supports a pile of mounts, but I wanted to use the ASCOM drivers for my AP mount, so had to upgrade to TheSkyX Professional.

Some of you heard the news that our 16" scope had fallen ill last week.
Actually, the scope is fine. It's the mount that is ill.

 

Our first suspicion was the one of the circuit boards had bitten the dust as
it did a few years ago. Tonight Andy and I did some more digging and voltage
tests revealed that the circuit board seems fine. So we did some exploratory
surgery and have a firm diagnosis. Are you ready for it?........ Mice! 

 

Somehow the little buggers squeezed through the grill work and made
themselves at home inside the mount. The bits of nut shells we found inside
obviously did not satisfy their hunger so they chose to find nourishment
from the cables that power the motors and encoders. It's similar to the
"ribbon" cables you find inside a computer. 

 

A new cable should fix the problem but we still have the issue of bits of
nut shells that found their way into the RA shaft bearings. Andy and I will
be dismantling the mount over the long weekend to rectify the bearing
situation. 

 

WARNING: The observatory has tons of stuff laying about so please steer
clear of the NE corner of the building.

 

We will also take this opportunity to tidy up the wiring.

 

Hope to have it up and running again soon. We'll keep you posted.

Truth be told, I know almost nothing about electronics. But I do know about

I would have loved to come out and help you and Andy tonight. But, I have been battling a severe (Klingon?) head cold for the last week that has also affected everyone at work. So, I will keep it at home and wish you both good luck with the repair job ahead. I will take a rain check on the Hydrogen Alpha visual of the Moon as I would really like to see the Moon too through “rose-coloured glasses”. Would suggest putting a hinged cage of fine steel mesh screen on a shaped chicken-wire shell around the mount to prevent further rodent intrusions when the ‘scope is not in use. Once they find a warm home, it is difficult to keep them out. Good luck.

Good News!

 

Andy and I were successful in repairing the damage done by the inconsiderate mice. We took the mount to Andy’s workshop to carry out surgery.

 

In all, there were 6 wires that had been chewed through. The mice obviously preferred the taste of DEC wires because RA wires were untouched. We also were able to remove the bit of nut shells that made their way into the DEC shaft bearings.

 

Tonight we will be heading to the observatory to reinstall the mount and scope. After that we will adjust Polar alignment and do a short run to tune pointing accuracy. 

 

We would welcome your company if you feel like lending a helping hand. If you can stay out late enough we should have everything finished in time to have some fun with the refurbished mount. Andy discovered the best view of a full moon you will ever see. A imaging Hydrogen Alpha filter does a fabulous job and dimming down the bright moon and reveals amazing details that you can only see with the Ha Filter.

 

It will be crystal clear tonight but it will get chilly so dress warm.

 

Oh, and we are going to be reducing the clutter of wires on the back of the scope. I have made a power console that sit atop of the scope and provides different voltages:

-          2V for the illuminated reticle on the finder scope

-          5V for the USB hub

-          8V to power a Canon DSLR camera

-          12V for cooling fans (we will reconnect them at some point), dew heater controller (coming soon).

This will eliminate several cables running through the mount and it will also eliminate the need for a bunch of AC adapters. 

 

I will be posting pictures of the operation in a few days.

Essex county telescope is set up and looking at Venus. I know a little boring but its best I getting for now. Hoping for a look at saturn later tonight

Good news! The 16" scope is back in action.

 

After repairing the damaged cables, Andy, Jason, Colin and myself remounted
the scope and had some time left over to get a good look at the moon with
the aid of a hydrogen alpha filter.

 

We still have some tidy-up work to do on the wiring but the scope is ready
for action.

 

I posted some photos on the Forum website (http:\\forum.hamiltonrasc.ca).
Look in the Observatories section and you will see a new topic "Paramount ME
Mount Repair".

You are most welcome Joe. The scope works well thanks to Colin Haig our National 2nd, who brought it back to life last month. If it gives you any trouble just shout out, and a I assure you will get lots of help. Just a note to everyone lurking out there, we have a lending program for members to sign out a club scope for 30 days. We have lots of scopes so don't be shy.

I may be there, however I need to clarify the date. It says Thursday, 
April 27th, however Thursday is the 26th. If it Friday, April 27th I 
will be there. If it is Thursday, April 26th I will be in T.O. for an

For those of us who attended Gary Colwell's Astroimaging session, we were
not disappointed. It was another great example of how one can venture into
the dark side of astronomy without it being to complicated.

Gary discussed the various planetarium and astronomy software available and
for those interested, the Hamilton site lists most of the products
discussed. Once the site is open on your browser, click the resource link on
the top and scroll down and click on software tools.  This opens another
page with planetarium software and astrophotography software on the left.
>From there you can select either one and see the list of products. I have
gone through the list and have provided some additional information.

The planetarium software link has TheSkyX, Starrynight, Stellarium, and
Carte du Ciel all can be run with Windows or Mac. Stellarium and Carte du
Ciel are free. Earth Centered Universe (ECU) is missing from the list and is
run on Windows only from what I found on the website. It is $80. This
product was developed by Dave Lane of the Halifax centre and past RASC
president. He is quick to respond to questions. If you click on TheSkyX link
it will state post not found but the links on the top work fine.  I use ECU
and just recently obtained TheSkyX.

The astrophotography software link has BackyardEOS which runs on Windows
from what I could find on the website and is a great program for those who
use a Canon camera. The creator lives in Ottawa and is quick to answer
questions on the forum in the Yahoo groups. Images Plus (link on our website
not working) which Gary talked about runs on Windows. This is a popular
program used by many astronomers and will most likely be my next full
purchase. Nebulosity can be run with Windows and Mac and is a good starter
program for the price with a great forum on Yahoo groups. Maxim DL can be
run on Windows and is the granddaddy of programs. Deep Sky Stacker uses
Windows and is free. PHD autoguiding is run with Windows or Mac and is free
and is distributed from the same site as Nebulosity. Astro Photography Tool
(APT) is not listed but used by Gary and looks similar to BackyardEOS. I use
BackyardEOS, Nebulosity and PHD.

issue.

Hi folks,

First posting... but wondering if there might be a few folks who would
be willing to help with some astronomy, on the last weekend of May, at
the Binbrook Conservation Area?

 

We're out there for a camp, Friday and Saturday night. We have a list of
possible topics (badge bits), and could do some in daylight, but also
after dark. (Friday likely easier for this, they tend to stay up later
Fridays)

 

Hoping for help, that might understand 8-12 year olds. ;-)

The Field of View feature is indispensible for selecting imaging targets.

Suggestion...to help you choose which refractor to buy, "invent" a telescope
that gives you 500mm and 600mm focal length (aperature X's focal ratio. Ie:
80mm*f8 = 480mm). Plug those focal lengths into TheSky and then pick those
objects that are on your imaging "wish list". It will help you decide what
focal length scope you should buy.

On Saturday I purchased the TheSkyX Serious Astronomer version and therefore
the wet Sunday we had today. The wet weather gave me the chance to explore
the software and see what it can do. I enjoyed using the field of view
calculator which can be placed on objects to determine if my scope/camera
combination will allow my set up to take pictures of the entire object.  I
can see my next purchase down the road will be a refractor, perhaps either
80 or 102 mm. Next task is to go out to the observatory and connect my mount
and confirm the telescope control.

I read the article about planetary imaging by Jerry Lodriguss in the May
issue of Sky & Telescope and it peaked my interest. Has anyone tried this
using his method? What about those who have the Canon XSi (450D), have you
tried taking pictures when the camera doesn't shoot video and use software
such as Registax?

I made the same purchase about a month ago to use with my scopes and mount, but quickly discovered that the SA version doesn't support ASCOM mount control. The software natively supports a pile of mounts, but I wanted to use the ASCOM drivers for my AP mount, so had to upgrade to TheSkyX Professional.

Subject: RASC Hamilton 16" Scope Diagnosis - Mystery Solved

Some of you heard the news that our 16" scope had fallen ill last week.
Actually, the scope is fine. It's the mount that is ill.

 

Our first suspicion was the one of the circuit boards had bitten the dust as
it did a few years ago. Tonight Andy and I did some more digging and voltage
tests revealed that the circuit board seems fine. So we did some exploratory
surgery and have a firm diagnosis. Are you ready for it?........ Mice! 

 

Somehow the little buggers squeezed through the grill work and made
themselves at home inside the mount. The bits of nut shells we found inside
obviously did not satisfy their hunger so they chose to find nourishment
from the cables that power the motors and encoders. It's similar to the
"ribbon" cables you find inside a computer. 

 

A new cable should fix the problem but we still have the issue of bits of
nut shells that found their way into the RA shaft bearings. Andy and I will
be dismantling the mount over the long weekend to rectify the bearing
situation. 

 

WARNING: The observatory has tons of stuff laying about so please steer
clear of the NE corner of the building.

 

We will also take this opportunity to tidy up the wiring.

 

Hope to have it up and running again soon. We'll keep you posted.

It also helps that Andy knows all about a Paramount ME. 

Truth be told, I know almost nothing about electronics. But I do know about
electrical "plumbing". I even have a "hobby business" making retrofit kits

I would have loved to come out and help you and Andy tonight. But, I have been battling a severe (Klingon?) head cold for the last week that has also affected everyone at work. So, I will keep it at home and wish you both good luck with the repair job ahead. I will take a rain check on the Hydrogen Alpha visual of the Moon as I would really like to see the Moon too through “rose-coloured glasses”. Would suggest putting a hinged cage of fine steel mesh screen on a shaped chicken-wire shell around the mount to prevent further rodent intrusions when the ‘scope is not in use. Once they find a warm home, it is difficult to keep them out. Good luck.

Good News!

 

Andy and I were successful in repairing the damage done by the inconsiderate mice. We took the mount to Andy’s workshop to carry out surgery.

 

In all, there were 6 wires that had been chewed through. The mice obviously preferred the taste of DEC wires because RA wires were untouched. We also were able to remove the bit of nut shells that made their way into the DEC shaft bearings.

 

Tonight we will be heading to the observatory to reinstall the mount and scope. After that we will adjust Polar alignment and do a short run to tune pointing accuracy. 

 

We would welcome your company if you feel like lending a helping hand. If you can stay out late enough we should have everything finished in time to have some fun with the refurbished mount. Andy discovered the best view of a full moon you will ever see. A imaging Hydrogen Alpha filter does a fabulous job and dimming down the bright moon and reveals amazing details that you can only see with the Ha Filter.

 

It will be crystal clear tonight but it will get chilly so dress warm.

 

Oh, and we are going to be reducing the clutter of wires on the back of the scope. I have made a power console that sit atop of the scope and provides different voltages:

-          2V for the illuminated reticle on the finder scope

-          5V for the USB hub

-          8V to power a Canon DSLR camera

-          12V for cooling fans (we will reconnect them at some point), dew heater controller (coming soon).

This will eliminate several cables running through the mount and it will also eliminate the need for a bunch of AC adapters. 

 

I will be posting pictures of the operation in a few days.

Good news! The 16" scope is back in action.

 

After repairing the damaged cables, Andy, Jason, Colin and myself remounted
the scope and had some time left over to get a good look at the moon with
the aid of a hydrogen alpha filter.

 

We still have some tidy-up work to do on the wiring but the scope is ready
for action.

 

I posted some photos on the Forum website (http:\\forum.hamiltonrasc.ca).
Look in the Observatories section and you will see a new topic "Paramount ME
Mount Repair".

The RASC is making available a large array of promotional merchandise associated with the Venus transit.  If you would like to order something, please look through the attached excel spreadsheet listing the items for sale and email me back by the end of next week with your order  (May 4th) so that I can get the order off in time. As indicated by the RASC, all items are in limited quantity, so the sooner we  get our order in the better.

For those of us who attended Gary Colwell's Astroimaging session, we were
not disappointed. It was another great example of how one can venture into
the dark side of astronomy without it being to complicated.

Gary discussed the various planetarium and astronomy software available and
for those interested, the Hamilton site lists most of the products
discussed. Once the site is open on your browser, click the resource link on
the top and scroll down and click on software tools.  This opens another
page with planetarium software and astrophotography software on the left.
>From there you can select either one and see the list of products. I have
gone through the list and have provided some additional information.

The planetarium software link has TheSkyX, Starrynight, Stellarium, and
Carte du Ciel all can be run with Windows or Mac. Stellarium and Carte du
Ciel are free. Earth Centered Universe (ECU) is missing from the list and is
run on Windows only from what I found on the website. It is $80. This
product was developed by Dave Lane of the Halifax centre and past RASC
president. He is quick to respond to questions. If you click on TheSkyX link
it will state post not found but the links on the top work fine.  I use ECU
and just recently obtained TheSkyX.

The astrophotography software link has BackyardEOS which runs on Windows
from what I could find on the website and is a great program for those who
use a Canon camera. The creator lives in Ottawa and is quick to answer
questions on the forum in the Yahoo groups. Images Plus (link on our website
not working) which Gary talked about runs on Windows. This is a popular
program used by many astronomers and will most likely be my next full
purchase. Nebulosity can be run with Windows and Mac and is a good starter
program for the price with a great forum on Yahoo groups. Maxim DL can be
run on Windows and is the granddaddy of programs. Deep Sky Stacker uses
Windows and is free. PHD autoguiding is run with Windows or Mac and is free
and is distributed from the same site as Nebulosity. Astro Photography Tool
(APT) is not listed but used by Gary and looks similar to BackyardEOS. I use
BackyardEOS, Nebulosity and PHD.

gives a comparison of various programs. Hopefully it won't confuse the
issue.

Many of the programs can be found on the Yahoo group forums. To get a better
idea if a product is suitable for your needs, check out the website and ask
fellow astronomers what they use.  Hope this is helpful and I am looking
forward to Gary's next session.

Subject: RASC Hamilton Help with a Scout Camp?

Hi folks,

First posting... but wondering if there might be a few folks who would
be willing to help with some astronomy, on the last weekend of May, at
the Binbrook Conservation Area?

 

We're out there for a camp, Friday and Saturday night. We have a list of
possible topics (badge bits), and could do some in daylight, but also
after dark. (Friday likely easier for this, they tend to stay up later
Fridays)

 

Hoping for help, that might understand 8-12 year olds. ;-)
