RASC Hamilton RASC - Any ideas/help for a Cub Scout Fun Day?

HI Andy

What time would you suggest we arrive?...can we get all 160 kids into an
area to do the presentation?....it would be best if we could...how would we
best cover this without extending the presentation over a few hours?

We could stay for dinner as well then set up the scopes.

Ok, so here's the skinny. ;-)

 

The majority of the event is a day event, for 160 or so kids, coming through
in rotations.

They know it's daylight, so we can only do some of the badge, but we can
expand on whatever we want to. but we need to make it as hands on as we can,
and Terry (one of our most experienced leaders, and an amateur astronomer
himself) may have some good cooperative ideas to lend to the discussion. (I
know he will!)

 

And then, what I was thinking was, if the day/evening looks clear. as many
of you who want to stay as our guests for dinner, can help our own group of
35 or so, go out and see the actual bits, when the sun goes down.

 

Does that make sense? :-)

This is Gary Colwell, and I would be happy to help out with the cubs on the
20th. I would suggest that  we plan the astronomy program in the early
evening so if it is clear we can actually do the event with the cubs and
point out the real stuff in the sky. As you know I have a presentation for
the cubs to get their astronomy badge, and I would be more than happy to do
that for them. I will also extend an invitation to the club members to help
out with scopes for that night. 
My suggestion is to gather all the cubs for the "presentation" so we can
complete it with everyone present, then once that is done we can rotate the
kids through the telescopes and point out some celestial objects. The moon
is almost at first quarter that evening so observing the moon will be great!
Let me know if this works out for you so I can make an announcement for all
the club

Hey guys & gals,

 

Don't mean to only keep emailing when I need help, but, well, it is what it
is. ;-)

 

On October 20th, at Camp Nemo, 9am-3pm, we're having Hamilton-Wentworth and
Area, Cub Scout Fun Day.

The theme is Star Wars. and our group thought to work in a little
educational themed bit, from the Cub Astronomy Badge, for the groups passing
through.

 

Cubs being 8-10 years old, we know we need to be animated, make it fun, make
it hands on. and I am looking for more ideas. (although we have some leaders
who have done daytime star work before too) :-)

 

The base requirements for their badge are these:  (some need to be
reinforced/completed , after dark)

	
	
1.

Teach another Cub how to use the pointer stars of the Big Dipper to find
Polaris, the North Star.

	
2.

Show how to orient and read a seasonal star map. Be able to find five
constellations of your choice.

	
3.

Learn and tell a story related to a constellation or an aboriginal legend
regarding the night sky.

	
4.

Know and describe three sky features:


 

a)

Milky Way


 

b)

Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)


 

c)

Comets


 

d)

Meteors


 

e)

Planets


 

f)

Stars


 

g)

Satellites


 

h)

Eclipses

	
5.

Know the phases of the moon and the moon's role in causing ocean tides.

 

Those being the BASE requirements, we can of course add ANYTHING else we
want, that we think they would like to know, learn, etc.
We've done games to explain tides, masses of cub hoardes, etc. :-)

 

The day will have 150-200 youth rotating around.

 

Open to your ideas, experience, etc. :-)

 

My own group is staying for the whole weekend. so the last idea I had was,
if some folks wanted to come and help us out in sharing the wisdom with the
kids. and the weather were to be clear Saturday evening, you are MOST
welcome to join us for supper as our guests, and stay for the evening until
dark, and we could all look at the stars through telescopes or the like?
