    Abstract
    Studying life 
      on Earth during the past 3 billion years has led the community of 
      astrobiologists to an understanding of what type of record Earth’s 
      earliest life would have left. Traces of organic carbon, nitrogen, and 
      sulfur along with the isotopic compositions of these elements are powerful 
      tools that we’ve used for these studies. Controversy comes in finding 
      evidence of life in even older sedimentary rocks-those greater than 3.5 
      billion years old. Marilyn Fogel and the Carnegie Institution of 
      Washington’s astrobiology team has studied the characteristics of abiotic 
      carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur from carbonaceous chondrites, mantle 
      peridotites, and hydrothermal synthesis experiments in order to understand 
      the patterns of abiotic organic matter formation so that it can be 
      distinguished from the remains of biological processes. Fogel will 
      describe her work studying a Mars analogue environment in Svalbard and 
      contrast that with recent work on organic matter found in Martian 
      meteorites.
