I was there in Jan and the opposite is the case the locals are very opposed and in fact demonstrate and actually create artificial light on neighbouring mountains using mirrors to discourage the astronomers. The top of mount kea is a sacred place and the only ones who benefit in the community are the tribal leaders who most likely do not share with the poor natives. The story is not new and has been repeated all over the world. Natives loose control and big dollars sway morals.
