Ted Rudyk will be our guest speaker and will be talking about Kuiper Belt Objects (asteroids, comets, Planetoids). Kuiper belt objects are important to our understanding of the history and evolution of the solar system, but much is is still not known about them. In particular, the population and size distribution of KBOs is difficult to determine, due to their distance and small size. Using specially designed cameras, we hope to use the occultation method to detect KBOs two orders of magnitude smaller than what one can detect using traditional methods. Ted is a frequent host at public outreach events that he has hosted in the GTA (Saddington Park, Forks of the Credit, York University Observatory), as well as his work with Efston Science. Ted is working on his Masters Degree in Astronomy at Western University. I've posted that sky chart in NOVA section of the Forums, in case anyone wants to use it. The ISS will go into the Earths shadow before it completely goes across the sky, so look for any colour changes as it does. Also, if you have binoculars, use them for this and see if the ISS looks distinctly "non-stellar" or not. Does it seem to change shape as it goes from one side of the sky to the other? I've posted that sky chart in NOVA section of the Forums, in case anyone wants to use it. The ISS will go into the Earths shadow before it completely goes across the sky, so look for any colour changes as it does. Also, if you have binoculars, use them for this and see if the ISS looks distinctly "non-stellar" or not. Does it seem to change shape as it goes from one side of the sky to the other? I've posted that sky chart in NOVA section of the Forums, in case anyone wants to use it. The ISS will go into the Earths shadow before it completely goes across the sky, so look for any colour changes as it does. Also, if you have binoculars, use them for this and see if the ISS looks distinctly "non-stellar" or not. Does it seem to change shape as it goes from one side of the sky to the other? The session will include describing the basics of astrophotography and what camera settings to use, different lenses you can use for different results, how to shoot the night sky, how exposure time affects your image and more. According to the Hamilton Clear Sky Chart, observing conditions should be clear by 7 p.m.. At the time of this writing, cloud cover is about 70 percent.
