Hello everyone.

Last year I had the opportunity of helping out the Township of North Frontenac hold 2 public star gazing nights near my cottage observatory. The response was overwhelming!.....Because of this, I was approached to help the Town council with plans to have the area designated a “Dark Sky preserve”.

I just had to share this amazing accomplishment with the Township ….the town council has approved and applied to the RASC to be recognized as a “Dark Sky Preserve” for the entire township and will be building a public observing pad with hydro, 2 washrooms and an area for other telescopes to be used.  I along with Andy Blanchard and Guy Nason, another local astronomer, and Terry  Dickenson were invited to be Subject Matter Experts and help guide the township in putting together the application as well as offer ideas for a public observing area to be built.. Together we helped them with the application to present to the RASC for approval. The excitement we have seen in not only the Township Committee, but also in the residents has been overwhelming.!

I am proud  to be a part of this effort, and look forward to dark skies in the region for a long time to come!  It just shows you that something can be done to preserve our beautiful dark skies!

 

I hope some of the members will come to the area some time to enjoy some of the darkest skies in Ontrario!....our Grand Opening of the Observing site will take place on July 6, 2013……construction begins this Monday!!!!!!!

On Behalf of North Frontenac Township we are submitting our application for designation as a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Canadian Astronomical Society of Canada. Construction of the observing pad starts next week with our grand opening scheduled for July 6’th 2013.

 

We are very excited about this project and it has already generated significant interest. This program will be used as an anchor to launch economic development in North Frontenac and education related the preservation of our natural habitat.

 

We trust we have met the requirements for designation including plans for a lighting bylaw which is in final stages and will be submitted to Council for approval this summer.

 

We look forward to your review and designation in the near future.
