The first session of the 2014 NOVA Program is tonight, and I've just
come back from the Observatory.

The parking lot has not been plowed out from Saturday's snowfall, and
while a 4x4 vehicle might be able to make it in and out, I'd recommend
that anyone coming out tonight park on the road outside the Observatory.
The road is wide enough for this.

Looking forward to seeing all the participants tonight.

Start time is 7:30, and the evening sky is promising to be clear enough
to start with some observing.

  On Friday night, we will have a Sidewalk Astronomy event at the Canadian Tire in Waterdown (Highway 5, near Highway 6).  We will look at the Moon (first quarter), Jupiter, the Orion nebula and the Pleiades.  Everyone is welcome!  If fact, if you had a telescope but no experience at using it, we will teach you on the spot, and you can view with everyone else.
 
The first telescopes and binoculars will be arriving at 5:00 for set-up, but you should arrive at 6:00 or later.  The store closes at 9.00 pm, so you should wait until 9 to pack up.
 
This is the first time (in a long time) that we will have a store to do sidewalk astronomy, not a park or a parking lot.  Canadian Tire is interested, but we have to make it great, so other stores will be interested too.
 
If it is cloudy, we will switch to Saturday night.

 The event is cancelled for tonight and tomorrow because - you guessed it - clouds.  I will be going to the Canadian Tire in Waterdown in case the moon is visible, but Sidewalk Astronomy will have to wait until next week, at the earliest.

Ancient Egyptian Astronomy
The ancient Egyptians were not morbid, a statement which may seem odd when considering their many burial chambers, tombs, mortuary temples and other similar sites that remain standing in present-day Egypt.  It was rather that they celebrated life so much they wanted to ensure all earthly pleasures could be enjoyed continuously in the afterlife.  They believed that they could do this by elaborately depicting everyday scenes, probably very much idealized, on walls and ceilings leading up to and surrounding their place of interment.  Included in these portrayals are tantalizing representations of the ancient Egyptian night sky, which give us some insight of how they interpreted the celestial sphere and the range of objects within it.
During this talk, I will give an overview of ancient Egyptian astronomy, and then focus on one particular representation of the night sky: the diagonal star tables.  I will also discuss a recent expedition to Egypt and our current work in this fascinating field.

Robert Cockcroft is a postdoctoral research fellow at McMaster University, where he is also the McCallion Planetarium Manager and first-year undergraduate lecturer in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  His graduate research centred on observational astronomy, where he looked at globular clusters in the nearby Triangulum and Andromeda Galaxies, and his current research focus is history of astronomy - in particular, ancient Egyptian astronomy.

 The event is cancelled for tonight and tomorrow because - you guessed it - clouds.  I will be going to the Canadian Tire in Waterdown in case the moon is visible, but Sidewalk Astronomy will have to wait until next week, at the earliest.

Ancient Egyptian Astronomy
The ancient Egyptians were not morbid, a statement which may seem odd when considering their many burial chambers, tombs, mortuary temples and other similar sites that remain standing in present-day Egypt.  It was rather that they celebrated life so much they wanted to ensure all earthly pleasures could be enjoyed continuously in the afterlife.  They believed that they could do this by elaborately depicting everyday scenes, probably very much idealized, on walls and ceilings leading up to and surrounding their place of interment.  Included in these portrayals are tantalizing representations of the ancient Egyptian night sky, which give us some insight of how they interpreted the celestial sphere and the range of objects within it.
During this talk, I will give an overview of ancient Egyptian astronomy, and then focus on one particular representation of the night sky: the diagonal star tables.  I will also discuss a recent expedition to Egypt and our current work in this fascinating field.

Robert Cockcroft is a postdoctoral research fellow at McMaster University, where he is also the McCallion Planetarium Manager and first-year undergraduate lecturer in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  His graduate research centred on observational astronomy, where he looked at globular clusters in the nearby Triangulum and Andromeda Galaxies, and his current research focus is history of astronomy - in particular, ancient Egyptian astronomy.

The first session of the 2014 NOVA Program is tonight, and I've just
come back from the Observatory.

The parking lot has not been plowed out from Saturday's snowfall, and
while a 4x4 vehicle might be able to make it in and out, I'd recommend
that anyone coming out tonight park on the road outside the Observatory.
The road is wide enough for this.

Looking forward to seeing all the participants tonight.

  On Friday night, we will have a Sidewalk Astronomy event at the Canadian Tire in Waterdown (Highway 5, near Highway 6).  We will look at the Moon (first quarter), Jupiter, the Orion nebula and the Pleiades.  Everyone is welcome!  If fact, if you had a telescope but no experience at using it, we will teach you on the spot, and you can view with everyone else.
 
The first telescopes and binoculars will be arriving at 5:00 for set-up, but you should arrive at 6:00 or later.  The store closes at 9.00 pm, so you should wait until 9 to pack up.
 
This is the first time (in a long time) that we will have a store to do sidewalk astronomy, not a park or a parking lot.  Canadian Tire is interested, but we have to make it great, so other stores will be interested too.
 
If it is cloudy, we will switch to Saturday night.

For those who may be wondering, the NOVA course will be held this
evening.

The observatory parking lot conditions may be the same as last time,
though.

Looking forward to seeing all the participants tonight.

Start time is 7:30, and the evening sky is promising to be clear enough
to start with some observing.

Ancient Egyptian Astronomy
The ancient Egyptians were not morbid, a statement which may seem odd when considering their many burial chambers, tombs, mortuary temples and other similar sites that remain standing in present-day Egypt.  It was rather that they celebrated life so much they wanted to ensure all earthly pleasures could be enjoyed continuously in the afterlife.  They believed that they could do this by elaborately depicting everyday scenes, probably very much idealized, on walls and ceilings leading up to and surrounding their place of interment.  Included in these portrayals are tantalizing representations of the ancient Egyptian night sky, which give us some insight of how they interpreted the celestial sphere and the range of objects within it.
During this talk, I will give an overview of ancient Egyptian astronomy, and then focus on one particular representation of the night sky: the diagonal star tables.  I will also discuss a recent expedition to Egypt and our current work in this fascinating field.

Robert Cockcroft is a postdoctoral research fellow at McMaster University, where he is also the McCallion Planetarium Manager and first-year undergraduate lecturer in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  His graduate research centred on observational astronomy, where he looked at globular clusters in the nearby Triangulum and Andromeda Galaxies, and his current research focus is history of astronomy - in particular, ancient Egyptian astronomy.

I agree with you Gary. However, when I speak with my son in Edmonton he simply laughs at me or uses the term wimp! I suppose everything’s relative?!
