Hi all,

Just a reminder that we will be having a talk from Dr. Josh Walawender from the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii on the observatory and its contributions to astronomy.  It will be a great talk so don't miss it.  I have attached a copy of the synopsis and his bio and a reminder of the invite for this evening.  Hope to see you tonight....

Synopsis:

The Keck Observatory has been in operation for more than 25 years as the world’s largest optical and infrared telescopes. Observations made at Keck have fundamentally changed our understanding of the universe. In his talk, Dr. Walawender will share his favorite Keck discoveries and how they’ve rewritten astronomy textbooks.


Bio:

Dr. Josh Walawender is a staff astronomer at the W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea on the Big Island of Hawaii.  He received B.A.s in Physics and Astrophysics from the University of California at Berkeley in 2000 and his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2006.  Josh has worked on infrared instrumentation, astronomical data reduction pipelines, and robotic telescopes.  His research interests are in star formation where he studies protostellar outflows — the phenomenon where young stars launch high speed jets of material out of their poles as they accrete material.  Josh is also an avid amateur astronomer and telescope builder and still enjoys observing under the Big Island’s pristine night skies.
